Fresh Looks for Fall Coming from Willow House

Ok, again, a shameless plug for my home-based business, formerly Southern Living at HOME, but I was taught to share and to keep this to myself would be selfish. :D

My new Willow House catalogs arrived a few days ago and I am thrilled to say they are AWESOME.  Lots of old favorites but some fresh new looks, too-- a great mix of the two, I think.  Couple of things I'm happy about:  lower price points on many of our old favorites, lower shipping rates, and some really clean looks.  I'm especially excited about some of the new holiday products and it's something to be excited about the holidays when we're in the middle of summer!

Hard Working Decor

Organization challenges me daily and no where am I more challenged than in my home office.  After all, it's the hub of my home, where I write, and where I run my SLAH business.  But after many stops and starts, I've realized that sterile organizational systems are not for me.   What works for my creative and over-active mind is organization with style.  Fortunately, my SLAH business has afforded me many beautiful containers and shelves to help me along (you can check out our organization helpers by clicking here).

Tip of the Week: Show your true colors!

Memorial Day weekend is just around the corner, so let your decor show your patriotism.  Deck out the whole house?  No way.  A few simple touches and your holiday decorating will be a class act. 

Swap out your spring pillar candles with red ones.  Simple raffia strands tied in a bow around a solid color pillar add an extra touch.  Nestle them in sand, river pebbles, or let them stand on their own.  Break out your red and white checked table cloth for your patio table and use your white dinner ware that's been hidden away.  Pick up a handful of inexpensive small flags at Target or WalMart and tuck them into a planter or two, your centerpiece, or your flatware caddy.  My favorite accent is my fabulous Star Spangled Door Bucket, pictured here (yes, that's my front door).  Get yours through me for only $34.95, while supplies last.

Entertaining?  Gather any red, white, and blue serving pieces, vases, accents you have and build an eclectic spread. Pick up a holiday themed bouquet from your supermarket for an instant centerpiece and then accessorize your table or buffet.  Horchow has some delightful red stemware as a fun alternative to clear glass or plastic. But don't forget your glassware can be your best friend for inexpensive holiday decor.  A pretty glass bowl filled with strawberries and blueberries is not only a great accent, but delicious for your guests as well.  Enjoy!

Tip of the Week: Light Your Way

I've been inspired by all the beautiful and varied lanterns I've seen in stores, online, and in catalogs lately.  Now that your yard and deck are party-ready, be ready to shed some light and ambience on your outdoor decor with a collection of lanterns.  Not only are they the perfect disguise for those oft-needed citronella candles to control unwanted guests, but they're a wonderful and cozy alternative to flood lights or porch lights once the sun goes down.

For large open spaces you can cluster a variety of sizes around your container plantings.  Suspend smaller ones from the inner spokes of your umbrella or from shepherd's hooks in your yard or along your walkway.  Illuminate your outdoor dining table with one or more and don't forget to place a few strategically where you need a bit of light, such as in smaller seating areas or near a step that might be missed in the dark. 

Of course, I have some beautiful lanterns in my catalog on my website, such as the classic Drake Lantern and it's coordinating minis, the Firefly Lanterns, perfect for votive candles (pictured here).  The removeable glass cylinders will house your pillars or can be used as vases if you want to mix in some flowers.  If you want glass on the sides to protect your flame from breezes, try our beautiful Carriage House Lantern, with it's gold metallic finish and interesting detail.

But in all fairness, you can find lovely and affordable lanterns at Pottery Barn or my beloved Ballard Designs.  I've even spied some oversized but still inexpensive ones at Pier One.  In other words, keep your eyes open-- they abound in stores now!  The beauty of lanterns is that they can be enjoyed year-round.  Bring them inside in the winter time to add pizazz to a hall table or bookcase or even the powder room.  Now THAT's getting your money's worth!

Tip of the Week: Go Fresh!

Nothing seems to perk up a home like fresh flowers, but I've found they're often too expensive to enjoy on a regular basis.  Except for springtime! You can find wonderful bouquets and bunches of fresh flowers at WalMart or your local grocery store right now-- and they won't break the bank either.  Today I discovered bunches of fresh tulips at WalMart for $5 a piece.  Fifteen dollars later, they are brightening up my kitchen island, the side table in my living room, and my bathroom counter.  To keep them from drooping, put a penny in the water and ditch the flower food.  The copper helps balance out the water and keeps your tulips at attention!

Tulips not your cup of tea?  I discovered large mixed bouquets of daisies, gerbera daisies, carnations, a handful of roses and nice greenery for under $15.  Simply split them up into smaller bouquets and set around your home.  Remember that a simple beverage glass can make a beautiful vase.  Or you can line a favorite basket with plastic, add a soaked oasis in a shallow bowl and arrange your blooms.  This is a beauty for a fireplace hearth or kitchen table.

Tip of the Week: Finish What You Start!

I knew this day would come... the build-up has been happening behind the scenes for months.  Southern Living at HOME is re-launching this July with a new name and new looks.  I have it on good authority that many of your favorite products will still be available along with some exciting new ones!  But, I also hear that we are losing several of our "collections."  While I'm saddened by this tidbit of news, I'm hoping that means better "collections" are coming our way.

So consider this week's "Tip of the Week" to be your heads-up.  If you're collecting any of our product lines, especially flatware, pottery, dinnerware, glassware, you might want to finish what you've started.  I am ready to place your order anytime and will be discounting shipping and handling for all April orders in light of this news.  Make sure you visit my online catalog (www.southernlivingathome.com/heidimilton) to view our current collections and prices.

I will be providing you the list of products to be discontinued as soon as I have it, and you'll want to act fast.  I would imagine this news will be much like our twice-yearly sales... the early bird gets the worm! 

Quick and Easy Easter Centerpieces

If you're like me, Easter has crept up on you this year!  Thank goodness for a couple of quick and easy centerpieces for my Easter tablescape. 

Start with a simple glass hurricane or large glass vase.  My favorite Hemingway Hurricane from Southern Living at HOME has been called into action once again!  Pick up some colorful Easter jelly beans the next time you're at the supermarket and use those to anchor a pretty pillar candle in your hurricane or vase.  You can flank this with smaller glass vases filled with blooms from a simple supermarket bouquet.  I prefer the variety bouquets because the colors play off the colors of the jelly beans.

Another quick and easy idea is to line the bottom of a favorite bowl, either glass or ceramic with green moss from your local hobby store.  Nestle a short pillar candle in the center or 3 of varying heights if your bowl is big and shallow.  Fill in around the pillars with colorful Easter eggs-- either ones you and your family have dyed yourselves or decorative eggs from the hobby store.

Finally, don't forget the beauty of just flowers. Grocery stores and farmers markets are full of wonderful choices right now.   Either use a favorite decorative bowl, vase, or hurricane, embellish with clippings from your own yard if you'd like and you are set.

Tip of the Week: Lighten Up!

Spring is right around the corner, so lighten up!  The secret to lightening up your decor is in glassware.  Swap out your urns and ceramic or iron pieces for clear glass containers.  Mix and match your old florists' vases with simple glass hurricanes, candlesticks, and even high ball glasses right out of your kitchen cabinet.  Simple grocery store bouquets bring fresh inside on the cheap... or go the freebie route and use clippings from your own yard (or your neighbor's with permission!).  Any type of greenery or early spring blooms housed in glassware will instantly brighten your space.  My favorite is my Southern Living at HOME Hemingway Hurricane... it holds everything from a fresh bouquet to our collection of corks from celebratory bottles of wine or champagne.  I never have to worry about it "working" in my decor-- it's like a little black dress: perfect for every occasion.

Oh, and don't forget the importance of clean windows!  Winter's buildup of dust, water spots, and grime can minimize how much daylight gets in.  The benefits of daylight and sunshine to the human spirit are well-documented.  It energizes us!  Squeeze every ray of sunshine you can out of these late winter and early spring days and let it flood your home with new energy. 

New Style for SLAH Parties this Spring!

"So you want to host a party, but your friends and family are reluctant to commit. They're short on funds or on a tight budget and feel badly that they might not be able to purchase products to help you earn your hostess rewards. Sound familiar??

In this economy, who couldn't understand their position? I know I can, so I have revised my party style for this new Spring catalog. Not only does our new catalog have many new lower priced products (some even under $10!!), but the products, as always, speak for themselves.

My new party style is simply a trunk show, displaying a sampling of our beautiful products along with a few ideas on how to decorate or use them. No presentation will be given, but I will be available to answer any questions and give additional ideas for decorating or gift-giving as needed. And, of course, I will be happy to give away a door prize or two to add to the fun.

In short, my revamped party style is a 'come one, come all', no pressure situation for your friends and family. After all, the point of having a party is to spend time with your friends, right? I'm sure they will all find something they want--and can afford-- in our new Spring catalog, and when they do, YOU will still reap the rewards!

Just What You Need on a Chilly Day

My new favorite product from our Spring Southern Living at HOME catalog is our Oversized Scrollwork Throw.  It is proportioned so generously, even my slightly oversized husband can cover himself completely with it on the couch!  And the fabric is beautiful-- a chenille weave that is soft to the touch, but has alot of substance, too.  It's like being covered by a beautiful soft rug.  You can get yours through me for only $79.96... you'll know the quailty once you've got it in your hands.   And of course, it's Southern Living, so need I say more?
