Got the Blues? {And Another Giveaway!}

You're probably tired of reading about my passion for purple, so I thought I'd give it a rest and talk about another favorite... pops of blue.  While I was brightening my family room decor, I worked in a fair amount of celery green because it blended so well with the upholstery and wall color I already had.  But I also found myself adding a few fun touches of blue:

Like this flea market find!

I like having the flexibility to go heavier either toward the green or the blue accents.  As spring approaches, I'm craving just a little more blue.  So I started browsing online to see what was out there.

Blue Sky Lotus vase from World Market

Maren Collection from Pottery Barn

Sea Urchin platter from Pier One

Lotus Garden Stool from Ballard Designs

Some good options, right?  I love seeing just a pop or two of the blue against a sea of neutral, don't you?  Today I got a delivery from Willow House-- a product I'd ordered to place in an upcoming silent auction.

Our Santorini Urn... I'd never seen her up close before!  Notice how she found a spot on my mantle...

She looks right at home, doesn't she?

I'm in love...

I started looking at houzz.com for some inspirational photos for using blue accents in neutral decor and pulled some wonderful ones for my Blissful Blues Ideabook.  Check it out by clicking here.  All those gorgeous images only reinforced how much I love this product.  In fact, I love her so much, it's going to be hard to part with her for the silent auction!  I may have use some birthday funds to garner another. :)

And so, because I have to share the love, my THIRD Mondays in March Giveaway is one of these gorgeous Santorini Urns!

Here's the lowdown on the contest:
  • Comment here on where you need a pop of blue in your home. {1 entry}
  • Tweet about the giveaway (mention me @heidimilton) and come back leaving me a comment that you did so.
  • Visit the Facebook post (Willow House with Heidi Milton) and leave a comment there. {1 entry}

Door Bucket Love...and a Giveaway!

One of the easiest ways to brighten up for spring is on the front door. Your front door sets the tone for welcoming friends and family into your home. Make it beautiful, welcoming, and friendly! Door buckets are a wonderful vehicle for changing the look of your front porch or stoop on a dime, and offer more flexibility than a traditional wreath. My all time favorite is my Willow House Flower Market Door Bucket, one of the first products I received when I became a Southern Living at HOME consultant. This piece is so hard-working! She’s been indoors and out, front door, back door, held fresh flowers and faux.

While seasonal door buckets are fun, I highly recommend going with one that can go from season to season simply by changing the filler. Choose a great finish that will complement any door color. And make sure it’s well-constructed if you intend to leave it outside for extended periods of time. Check your favorite home sites and stores for good deals. I use inexpensive door buckets in the garage to contain sunscreen, bug spray, dog leashes, etc. All the ugly stuff you need handy, but don’t want to look at!

A great look for fall…

And here she is for spring…

Door buckets make wonderful gifts, too!  Pop over to Houzz to view my Front Door Decor ideabook [again, only the tip of the iceberg!] and then come on back...

To help you jump start your front door makeover, my second Mondays in March Giveaway is this gorgeous Flower Market Door Bucket AND Must-Have Door Hanger! Here’s the scoop:

this is too great - i just pulled out a willow house advertisement out of real simple magazine today to check it out; i've never heard of it today!!!

if i was to win this amazing little bottle i would rest it on my windowsill over my kitchen sink. the afternoon light shines in while i'm cooking dinner & washing dishes -- perhaps some fresh cherry blossoms would be appropriate as we welcome spring!

My Purple Room {Home Office Update}

I've searched high and low for an image of the inspiration room for my purple home office.  I don't know where mine got off to, but it certainly wasn't digital!  It dates back to the '90s when I visited one of the Southern Living Idea Houses with my mother... the year was 1995, because I remember leaving two babies at home with dad and grandad while Mom and I went galavanting around Georgia on a girls' outing. :)  Funny how you file memories away like that...how old the kids were, what your hairstyle was, even what outfit you were wearing.  Anyway, I digress!

The room in this particular Idea House-- Crabapple Cottage in Alpharetta, GA-- was a mudroom/laundry room:  transitional space between the home office and kitchen with laundry facilities, storage, hooks, even a door to the back deck.

John Tee, Architect, exclusively for Southern Living

See it tucked in there, between the office and kitchen?  In this case, it also had beautiful brick flooring and vibrant purple walls.  I was sold.  I knew I wanted a purple room.  My mom was tickled, remembering how purple had always been my favorite color... back to kindergarten when I had this marvelous purple dress with smocking that I wore for picture day.  I vowed that someday I would have a purple room like that one.

Fast forward to 1999 when I bought my current home.  There was an wonderful large space off the kitchen with a huge bay window that was called the dining room.  My first project in my new home was to paint this room a vibrant purple.  I had saved my issue of Southern Living magazine and spent hours with various paint chips, trying to approximate that fabulous color.  I think I got pretty darn close with a Behr Paint called Crowning (regal-sounding isn't it?). This room was flooded with light for most of the day and I knew I could get away with that saturated color without closing in the space.  The extensive white moulding in the room made it even more possible.

Flash forward another five years and I realized that my favorite room in the house was also the least used and enjoyed room in the house.  We simply didn't use a dining room-- at least not often.  So I made the radical decision to make that space my home office/study and move the dining room into was a little-used front living/music room.  A couple of factors in my decision to flip flop the spaces:
  • My purple room with the bay window got the best light of any room in the house, with it's southern exposure and big windows.  I wanted to spend time in this lovely space, but I still had things to accomplish-- a household to run, bills to pay, etc.
  • Its location right off the kitchen would keep me in ear-shot of my young kids, who were either in the family room, kitchen, or down in our basement playroom.  I could be in there working and still be in touch.

Home office now... I know-- it's a mess!

I didn't want to be confined to the traditional definition and location of spaces in my house.  I wanted my house to work for me.  Since then, my home office has become our hub.  I work there, write there, read there, run the household from there, and relax there.  My husband and children work and do homework and projects there -- even escape there themselves to watch a favorite tv show from time to time.  What was once the LEAST used space in the house is now the MOST used space in the house.

With regards to my precious purple on the walls, it has stood the test of time.  While my friends and family thought I was bold, capricious, and a little nutty in my choice of wall color, I love it as much today as I did 12 years ago.  Even if the decor and furnishings need some updating, my purple choice has stood the test of time.

Choose colors you love, that speak to you, and don't listen to the nay-sayers when you do.  It's your space, your home-- you should love the space you're in.
Don't let traditional designations of space in your home hem you in. Think about how you and your family will most use the space and make those rooms function accordingly.

Just another example of making our home our personal sanctuary, blazed with our individuality.

How about you?  Have you repurposed a room to work better for your family?  Or have you bucked the trends and gone with a "crazy" color on your walls that you love?

Don't forget to enter the first Mondays in March giveaway HERE.  You could be the lucky winner of this beauty.

Decorating with Demijohn Bottles and a Giveaway!

The first handful of spring-like days arrived and I wanted to work something blooming into my decor.  So I polished up my Lady Jane Bottleneck vase from Willow House and popped three {silk} blooming cherry stems in...

This is modeled after the old demijohn bottles, used in Europe for bottling and storing wine and oils.  The one I have is our smaller version.

I love how you can see the bubbles and slight irregularities in the glass.  Each one is hand-blown.

And the delicate green is just the right touch for early spring.  Our larger version is tinted blue.

My Willow House vases are priced just right, too--$49.96 and $79.96. Click HERE for ordering information.

I also found these online:

Ballard Designs

Pottery Barn

Jayson

I found several images of the demijohn bottles used in decor over at Houzz.  Head over there to check out my ideabook for more inspiration.  But be sure to come back here because....

I'm giving away a Lady Jane Bottleneck Vase from Willow House!!

One lucky winner will receive our small Lady Jane Bottleneck Vase!  Here's how you enter:
  • Leave a comment here telling me how or where you would display this lovely lady. {1 entry}

  • Comment on the link I've posted to my Facebook page (Willow House with Heidi Milton). {1 entry}.

Happy Blogiversay: Let's Celebrate!

Dear Friends,

Welcome to my Blogiversay! When I started this blog a year ago, I did not have a clear vision of what my goals were for this space.  I knew I wanted to have a way to showcase my business, outside of the confines of my company website, and talk about the things that inspire me in making a house a home.  Little did I know that this was the start of a great adventure and that I would not only cross paths with creative geniuses and heart of the home thinkers like myself, but I would also rediscover my own creative passions.  I love to recreate space to make it more functional and more beautiful... if I can do it on a budget, I'm over the moon.

While it's fun to follow the trends in the design industry and glean fresh inspiration from them, I am a believer that fabulous decor doesn't have to be trendy.  You see, it's a personal thing-- these spaces we call HOME.  It's where we raise our families, create and preserve memories, our unique safe-haven.  Think back on the house you grew up in.  What about that space-- that HOME-- shaped you?  Maybe it was the view out your bedroom window, the aroma of your mother preparing your favorite dish, your grandmother's china, or that comfy armchair where you spent hours reading.  Your memories are of sights, scents, textures, sounds.

"Home needs to be a safe place where we house not only our bodies, but our hearts and our souls." ~ Terry Willets in Creating a SenseSational Home
This is my desire for you... that you make your home truly your own.  Express your individuality and create that space that you love to be in and that nurtures your family and your home life.

A couple of years ago, a friend remarked to me: "Your home looks like the Southern Living at HOME catalog exploded in here."  I laughed.  She was right.  I was fully immersed in my business and, in loving their products and design ideas, I had amassed an incredible collection of "things."  But over the past year, in the course of writing this blog and expanding my own horizons, I've realized that a good many of those beautiful products are just "things."  They are lovely and of the highest quality.  But they have no personal meaning to me.  This is my HOME.  I want it to be filled with meaning.  With meaning-full things.

Last week in the blogosphere, I found myself part of a discussion about paring down "things," about over-exposure to design trends and the pressure to conform, and ultimately about finding our own individual style.   The Nester talked about accumulating less, about making more thoughtful and intentional choices in our purchases.  Jenny at The Little Green Notebook encouraged us to have a more discerning eye to what's trending in the industry... and whether we even like what we see.  And then Melissa at The Inspired Room summed it all up in her Everyone Deserves a Lovely Home post.  Bottom line: Let's put our own personal touch on our homes.  How freeing!  The conversation was echoing what had been on my own heart as I journeyed along on this blog.

I'm learning as I go, too.  I'm learning to balance my love of my business, design and decor with what works best for my family.  In the year ahead, I'll be sharing more of my own spaces and projects, what's meaning-full in my home, along with what's new and interesting in design trends.  I'll continue to showcase some products from my Willow House business, as they continue to produce gorgeous pieces that can help you create meaning in your own space.  I hope I inspire you to make your space your own and that what you find here can help you do just that.

I'm so glad you're here!  This month I'll be celebrating four years in business and one year blogging with Mondays in March giveaways {because everyone loves a freebie-- myself included}!  Every Wednesday, I'll announce the Giveaway of the week and each Monday night I'll post the winner.  That's FOUR giveaways this month!  Share the love, tell your friends, and meet me back here tomorrow for the first big giveaway announcement.

Thank you for your readership, your support, and your friendship.  Now, let's celebrate!

My First Giveaway!

I'm thrilled to be starting off the new year with a giveaway!

Over the holidays I kept thinking how I was anxious to shed the old, embrace the new, the fresh, especially in my decor.  Now I know what you're thinking ( surely not her!), but I'm ready to freshen up my family room and brighten up my home office.  What better way to do that than to break out a "blank slate" product-- a product that has endless possibilities?  And one of the first things that popped into my mind was our Hawthorne Hurricane.

Isn't she a beauty?  So onto the giveaway!!  I'll be giving away three of these Lovelies and here's all you have to do to be entered:

  • Become a follower (one entry)... I've got great things in store for 2011, so you won't regret it! If you're already a follower, you'll be automatically entered!
  • Then leave a comment here on what YOU would do with this beauty!  Let your imagination run wild. (one entry)
